He showed the limits of human knowledge. Some find this depressing; I find it liberating. Accept uncertainty, live by custom and feeling, stop pretending we have metaphysical certainty we don't have.
The lesson: extremes are wrong; synthesis is right. Pure rationalism (Descartes's evil demon, Spinoza's God-proofs, Leibniz's monads) seems disconnected from reality. Pure empiricism (Berkeley's idealism, Hume's skepticism) undermines itself. Kant showed we need BOTH—structured mind + empirical input. This pattern repeats: dialectic, thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Truth is usually in the middle.
